If your sound is set (in control panel) to 5.1, but you dont actually have a center channel speaker, this can happen.

In my specific situation, I do have real 5.1 and I had things set correctly in control panel, but someone had pushed the matrix button on my speakers, which causes the center channel to get eliminated in the place of simulated 5.1 sound, for folks who dont have a true surround output setup on their PC.
